2022 Google Algorithm Changes: What to Expect

Thousands of algorithm changes are made by Google each year. Google's algorithm update in 2021 was the most significant SEO trend of the year. In fact, the second half of the year saw so many updates that people are still waiting for analyses to determine which updates had what effect!


In 2022, some of last year's algorithm changes will have a greater impact. In this article, we'll focus on three Google Algorithm changes that will significantly impact search.

The Multitask Unified Model (MUM)

The unveiling of Google's plans for MUM was undoubtedly the most significant in the field of search.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to assist searchers with more difficult tasks. It was announced that MUM was 1,000 times more powerful than BERT when trained in 75 different languages. MUM can decipher the text, photos, and even video, and Google intends to add audio and video capabilities in 2022.


Several practical applications of MUM technology are being implemented in Google Search, including new ways to explore and discover topics, such as vaccine information processing. MUM will help Google's algorithms better understand search queries, content quality and relevancy, and more in the coming months and years.


The Page Experience Update

A long-awaited Page Experience update was launched by Google on September 2nd, 2021, and began rolling out in June. Thanks to this release, advertisers could now view a Page Experience score in Google Search Console.


Using Page Experience, each website's search results pages can be better for searchers. The following factors go towards calculating the  score:

  • Core Web Vitals - A set of metrics that measure page performance from a user experience (UX) perspective.
  • Errors in mobile usability must be eliminated from a page before it can be considered complete.
  • No good status is given to any page on a site if it has any security problems.
  • An HTTPS-enabled server is required for a Good page experience rating.
  • A website should not use advertising practices that are disruptive, distractive, or otherwise undesirable to the user experience.


Link Spam Update

A Google Search Central Blog entry published earlier this year under the header “Improving our systems to prevent link spam” detailed the changes made as part of the update.


The search engine giant advocated that SEO professionals and marketers adopt best practices for inbound and outgoing links, develop high-quality content, and improve the overall user experience on the online platform.


Broad Core Update

Google has made changes to its ranking algorithm as part of its core updates, which impacted many of the indexed web pages. The updates are meant to improve the quality and relevance of Google search results by reordering search rankings for indexed web pages.
